Greenwashing: pork giant Danish Crown forced to withdraw the

In Denmark, the "climate-controlled pig" label launched by Danish Crown was a real flop. The giant is accused of greenwashing

"Climate-controlled pig": this is the name of the new food label launched by the Danish pork giant Danish Crown. But the company's marketing campaign was a real flop in the country. After the launch of the (apparently) sustainable label, in fact, the company was forced to back down following the mobilization by Greenpeace Denmark and three other NGOs, which filed a complaint with the Danish consumer protection agency .

Goodbye to the cheating pig? We had to go through a bit of each, but we succeeded. Thank you for your support and backing…

Danish Crown deception exposed

According to Greenpeace Denmark, the most important marketing campaign ever carried out by the company - which is the largest pork exporter in the world and the largest pork producer in the EU - violates Danish marketing law because the meat produced does not it is far more respectful of the environment. It is therefore a real case of greenwashing.

To protest the deceptive Danish Crown campaign a few weeks ago, Greenpeace Denmark activists blocked the export of soybeans from the country's largest feed factory, destined for pig farms.

ACTION AGAINST DANISH CROWNS FORESTRY AND GREENWASHING

ACTION AGAINST DANISH CROWNS FORESTRYING AND GREENWASHING Huge amounts of soy are used to feed the many millions of pigs that Danish Crown slaughters every year. Most soy comes from South America, where it leads to the destruction of forests and nature. At the port of Aarhus, soy is made for feed. So in peaceful protest, Greenpeace activists used themselves and some large tree trunks - decorated as salami - to block access to part of the feed factory. Until recently, that part of the factory made pig feed, but through our communication with the factory owner DLG it is clear that precisely that part of the factory has now been converted to only produce feed for dairy cattle. We continued the campaign against Danish Crown with a 100 m2 banner that could be seen from large parts of Aarhus. But we resolved the blockade, as our focus this time around was to clarify Danish Crown's connection to destroyed forest. We are keeping up the pressure on Danish Crown to stop their greenwashing of meat in the middle of a climate crisis - see how you can help here: https : //act.gp/stop-DC

“Through its supply chain links to imports that destroy soybean forests for animal feed, Danish Crown, one of the world's largest exporters of pork, is responsible for Record deforestation in South America”Explains Greenpeace in a note.

Climate Control Pig Label: What's Real?

For its part, the Danish Crown claims that the pigs on their farms have a carbon footprint per kilo that is 25% lower than in 2005.

Ninety percent of our Danish pigs are climate-controlled - the company website reads - This means that the pigs come from one of our 950 Danish farms that have joined the Danish Crown's sustainability program, the Climate Track. Farmers following the Climate Track are committed to reducing their carbon footprint by 50% by 2030. This marks the first milestone on the journey towards achieving our vision of producing climate-neutral meat by 2050.

But as Greenpeace highlighted, the company's calculations don't include all field-to-table emissions. In addition, the company does not take into account the massive emissions from deforestation and destruction of ecosystems which occurs when the soil is used to grow pig feed. Its "climate-controlled pig" label would therefore be all crap.

“Danish Crown has not provided evidence that the climate impact of the pork that bears the label is less than that of other pork products and the farmers who supply pigs to Danish Crown have not committed. no binding target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions ”underlines Green Peace Denmark.

However, even though the controversial label has now been withdrawn on the Danish market, Danish Crown is considering propose its campaign in other countries such as Germany, Poland and Sweden. And it is not certain that the deception will be immediately exposed there, as happened in Denmark thanks to the mobilization of environmental organizations.
