Coca Cola again under indictment, according to a new Greenpeace report in 2016 the multinational would have produced a billion plastic bottles more. But wasn't the goal to reach 50% recycled plastic by 2020 in Europe?

According to environmentalists, who have been waging a battle against Coca Cola for years, the figures in total would be staggering, or 110 billion single-use plastic placed on the market every year; but the multinational of the most drunk beverage in the world, neither denies nor confirms.

From Coca-Cola there are, according to The Guardian which spread the news, only data on the percentage of these disposable packaging: in 2016 they were worth the 59% of the total, up from 58% in the previous twelve months.

The confrontation is on, but if it continues like this, by 2021 the number of plastic bottles produced worldwide will reach i 500 billion and most will continue to end up in landfills or in general, on the beaches and in the oceans, killing fish, turtles and the inhabitants of the sea in general. Just 7% is recycled, a paradox.

According to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, between 5 and 13 million tons of plastic are ingested by seabirds, fish and other organisms each year, and by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic than fish.

A harsh criticism comes from the mouth of Louise Edge, Greenpeace activist:

“Coca Cola speaks of sustainability, when the pace at which it is producing plastic bottles is literally astonishing. We calculated that the company produced over 110 billion plastic bottles in one year, 3.400 per second, refusing to take responsibility for its role in the pollution crisis affecting our oceans. We want Coca-Cola to deliver precise data about what it produces, ”he says.

Dal canto suo, Coca-Cola European Partners for some time it has been announcing green turns that are slow in coming. But remember that the multinational is present in addition 200 countries of the world, therefore its production of plastics, has a significant impact on the environment. Only last July, it announced it wanted to increase the amount of recycled plastic by 50% by 2020.

But in general, plastic bottles should be made of 100% recycled plastic, known as RPet. For this, the controversy of the activists does not stop, but Coca Cola is justified:

“Our global use number for PET bottles for 2016 is 59%, an increase of 1% from 58% in 2015. We continue to review and adapt our packaging strategy as part of our global business plan. In the UK all of our bottles and cans are 100% recyclable and have been since 2012 ”.

We talked about Coca Cola here:

For this reason, alongside the commitment of Coca Cola, the commitment of world governments is also needed to implement directives that go either towards recycling or towards the returnable void.
