Three million tons of plastic packaging. For the first time, Coca Cola together with other multinationals reveals how much plastic it produces, or 200 bottles per minute.

Scientists have long sounded the alarm, if we continue at this rate, the risk is that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. As we know, incorrect disposal and incivility continue to cause serious damage to the environment: plastic destroys biodiversity and kills fish and birds.

In addition to doing our part, one would also expect the multinationals that hold the world economy to do it and come out of secrecy about their global impact.

The manufacturer's Coca Cola data was provided to Ellen MacArthur's election campaign, which is pushing big companies and governments to do more to tackle plastic pollution. The figures, which so far the multinational of the most famous soft drink in the world, had never wanted to reveal until now, refer to 2017 and speak of the quantity of packaging produced.

Also other companies such as Mars, Nestlé and Danone (31 in all) and there is talk of about 8 million tons of plastic packaging per year. However, there are those who have not yet made a breakthrough in this sense, that is, while adhering to the global commitment to reduce plastic pollution, they did not want to disseminate the data. Among them are Pepsi Co, H&M, L'Oréal, Walmart, Marks & Spencer, and Burberry.

Those who have chosen transparency have not only disseminated the data, but according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which has decided to make a serious commitment to the fight against packaging.

“The decision of more than 30 companies to publicly disclose the annual volumes of plastic packaging in the report is an important step towards greater transparency. We congratulate the companies that publish this data and encourage all companies that produce and use plastics to disclose their ecological footprint, ”the foundation said.

Recall that the global commitment also includes the total elimination of single-use packaging, the creation of a circular economy. Small steps forward but as explained by the foundation, we are still a long way from solving the problem.

"We must not let our guard down to make real progress in tackling global plastic pollution by 2025 and moving from commitment to action is essential."
