In the production process, in fact, the characters were drawn by the animators and moved from frame to frame above the stencils. Before the arrival of digital tools, they were reproduced by hand on transparent sheets of acetate called rodovetri.

Thus, even the simplest scene needed combinations of rhodium glasses and backgrounds photographed with special techniques. To better understand the idea, look at how the scene in which the protagonist is there comes to life Princess Mononoke.

The whole thing lasts just four seconds, but behind it hides an incredible job of overlapping scenes.

It's all a mix of the artist's pictorial backgrounds Kazuo oga and the transparent colored rhodium glasses from Michiyo Yasuda, recently passed away.
