The Goterborg Film Festival is conducting a "pandemic cinema experiment" in the form of a competition. A candidate chosen from people from around the world will receive a one-week stay at the site of the historic Pater Noster lighthouse located on the island of Hamneskär, off the west coast of Sweden.

While there, the winning cinephile will receive free room and board along with unlimited access to this year's festival roster of films.

“Totally isolated. He's not allowed to bring anyone, of course, but also no phones and not even a book, ”art director Jonas Holmberg told CBC's As It Happens. "There will be only this person and the sea, the waves, the sky and the 60 different previews that we will present at the festival".

Inspired by the pandemic, Holmberg says the experiment aims to examine how social distance has transformed the experience of watching movies. The most noticeable change is the shift from watching movies in person to online and at home.

While traditionally, going to the movies has been a common experience shared with other audience members, the trend now is to see films alone or in small groups.

According to the festival's website, “Göteborg Film Festival 2021 will be anything but conventional. No crowds, no parties, no sold out cinemas. The focus of this year's festival, Social Distances, explores the new world that has emerged in the wake of the pandemic. What does cinema mean to us when we are isolated from everything else? To investigate, we are opening a brand new cinema. In the middle of the ocean ".

The requirements are to be a true cinema enthusiast, to tolerate loneliness well, to be a skilled communicator (because you have to document the experience).

The enthralling “solo” cinematic experience will take place from January 30th to February 6th. The winner will live in the lighthouse keeper's house, but all films will be shown in a purpose-built one-person cinema inside the lighthouse.

Interested film lovers should apply to the festival's website as soon as possible.

There is time to apply until January 17th. Applications should be sent to paternoster@goteborgfilmfestival.se
