The western region is characterized, in fact, by the vernacular architecture that boasts numerous and unusual wooden churches built between XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and still used as places of worship.
Built by the inhabitants themselves in the Gothic style, these sanctuaries intertwine elements of the Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition with elements of the local tradition.
Most of it is built on a tripartite floor, surmounted by octagonal or quadrilateral domes, fascinating are the bell towers and the colored carpets. Surrounding there are internal polychrome decorations that show sacred symbolic references.
Among the most famous there is certainly the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, located in the Carpathian region. A small gem erected on a slope that dominates from above and fits perfectly with the surrounding nature.
The wooden church retains all its original parts despite the passage of time. But it is not the only one, they are in fact more than three thousand those scattered throughout the territory and have become a symbol and pride of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
Eight of these churches are UNESCO heritage since 2010, since a project has begun to promote the conservation and use of all the sacred buildings in the town.
A Kiev, for example, the Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life was built with the main aim of preserving the country's wooden architecture.
The structure houses more than 105 architectural elements and the oldest wooden church in the village of Kruvka. It is enough to look at these images to realize all their splendor.
