Record auction for Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe! The staggering proceeds will go to charity

"Shot Sage Blue Marilyn", the work of the great Andy Warhol, was sold for 195 million dollars during an auction organized by Cristie's: it is a record in the art world

195 million dollars: this is the staggering figure for which the famous portrait of Marilyn Monroe signed Andy Warhol. “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” - this is the name of the silkscreen made in 1964 - thus officially became the most expensive work of art of the twentieth century. The famous image takes a promotional photo of the wonderful diva taken for the film "Niagara": that shot inspired Warhol, who painted five with backgrounds of different colors: red, orange, blue, sage blue (the one auctioned) and turquoise.

After a proposal for bids lasting about four minutes, the flamboyant portrait was purchased by the well-known gallery owner Larry Gagosian present in the hall of the Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, during the event organized by Christie's, the largest auction house in the world. This is how the previous record held by Pablo Picasso's painting “Women of Algiers”, which in 2015 had raised 179,4 million dollars, was broken. So far the highest price paid for a work by the king of pop art was $ 105, the amount for which the painting "Silver Car Crash" had been sold.

Now the astonishing proceeds (equivalent to 184 million euros) will go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation in Zurich, which is involved in creating educational and health programs to improve the lives of children around the world.
