Among the biblical stories most represented in the history of art, one of the best known is that of Judith and Holofernes, on which many artists over the centuries have tried their hand, offering different interpretations of a story that has as its protagonist a woman who saves the his people from military oppression

An unmissable exhibition in Rome on the theme of the biblical heroine, Judith, who beheads Holofernes: from November 26, 2021 al March 27 in fact, the exhibition Caravaggio and Artemisia: Giuditta's challenge is scheduled at Palazzo Barberini. Violence and seduction in painting between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, curated by Maria Cristina Terzaghi.

31 works on display from important national and international institutions including the Corsini Gallery and the Palatine Gallery in Florence, the Prado Museum and the Thyssen Museum in Madrid and the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, and which revolve around a single great hub: there Judith of Caravaggio, a symbolic work, with the Fornarina by Raphael, just from Palazzo Barberini, and then to the extraordinary Judith and Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi.

The exhibition itinerary is divided into four sections and opens with Giuditta at the crossroads between Maniera and Nature, in which a selection of sixteenth-century works show a new representation of the theme, characterized by the violence of the moment, as in the paintings of Pierfrancesco Foschi, Lavinia Fontana and by Tintoretto. At the center of the second section, entitled Caravaggio and his first interpreters, there is the famous painting Judith who beheads Holofernes by Merisi.

The third section Artemisia Gentileschi and the theater of Judith is dominated by the figure of Artemisia Gentileschi who, with her father Orazio, experimented on the subject several times. The fourth and last section entitled The virtues of Judith. Giuditta and Davide, Giuditta and Salomé is dedicated to the comparison between the theme of Judith and Holofernes and that of David and Goliath, united by the allegorical reading of the victory of virtue, cunning and youth over the brute strength of the tyrant who ends up beheaded.
