A temperature of 38 ° C was recorded in the Russian town of Verkhoyansk on June 20, 2020 and was recognized as a new record Arctic temperature by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The temperature, closer to the Mediterranean climate than to the Arctic one, was measured by the weather observation station during the exceptional and prolonged heat wave that Siberia suffered last year: in 2020, in fact, the average temperatures in Arctic Siberia they exceeded the seasonal averages by 10 ° C for much of the summer - also due to the devastating fires, the loss of ice surface and the fact that 2020 was one of the three hottest years ever.

The Arctic record is just one of a long series of observations reported by the WMO, and represents an important wake-up call for the ongoing climate crisis - explains Professor Taalas Petteri, secretary general of the WMO. - In 2020, a new record temperature was also recorded in the Antarctic continent: 18,3 ° C. Our experts are working to verify the highest temperature measurement of all time, the 54,4 ° C recorded in Death Valley in California in both 2020 and 2021, and to record a new record temperature in Europe, the 48,8 , XNUMX ° C recorded this summer in Sicily.

The Arctic is one of the fastest warming regions in the world - it warms up twice as fast as the world average. Verkhoyansk is located about 115 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, in a region characterized by a very dry and rigid continental climate (very hot summers and very cold winters): here the weather station has observed and recorded temperatures since 1885 (only since 2007, the recording of temperatures has also begun in the Antarctic continent). Analyzing temperatures in the Arctic offers an important litmus test on the health of our planet and on the severity of the ongoing climate crisis: through continuous monitoring and comparison with data from past years, it is possible to realize how fast it is progressing global warming - especially in particularly fragile ecosystems, such as those of the poles.
