“Immediately declare a state of global climate emergency”, the petition launched by young activists from all over the world

Declare the status of level 3 global climate emergency: this is the request that young climate activists from all over the world, led by Greta Thunberg, want to make through a petition addressed to the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres.

To reveal it is The Guardian, which has consulted the draft of the petition that should be launched in days by young environmentalists. In total, about 14 children from various countries of the world who have drawn up the text would be. Among them are Ranton Anjain and Litokne Kabua from Marshall Islands, Ridhima Pandey from India, Alexandria Villaseñor from the United States and Ayakha Melithafa from South Africa.

The demands of young environmentalists

Level 3 to which young people refer is the highest, the most serious. This is because young activists (and not only) are convinced that the problem of climate change can no longer be minimized and that we are ever closer to catastrophe.

"The climate emergency, which puts every person on this planet at risk in the near future, is at least as serious a threat as a global pandemic and in the same way requires urgent international action" the activists denounce.

The greatest hope for Greta Thunberg and the others is that world leaders can take action to send huge resources to the countries most exposed to global warming, in particular island states (on which much of Barack Obama's speech focused. at COP26) and those in development.

According to reports, the young people intend to urge the United Nations to appoint a crisis management team to "monitor immediate global climate action".

It is no longer the time to minimize

For Scott Gilmore, a human rights lawyer, declaring a global state of emergency would also lead to the creation of a special body to coordinate efforts between the various UN agencies.

This is one of the great lessons learned from the response to Covid - explains Gilmore - The World Health Organization has been tasked with leading the response, but it has received organizational support and infrastructure within the United Nations. The secretary general has really taken the lead in recent years in pushing states to declare national climate emergencies. The UN has not yet taken this step. The time has come for the petitioners to do so.

American activist Villaseñor, who started a climate strike outside the United Nations headquarters in New York at the age of 13, called for immediate action:

The UN has shown us that it is capable of mobilizing against impending global threats, and the climate crisis is the largest global threat ever known to humanity. We are rapidly running out of time to protect children and future generations. It is time for adults to step forward and collect a critical global response to the climate crisis.
