The stairway of love is therefore enriched with magical verses that can act as a backdrop for postcard photos or real declarations. Already at the time of Gazzè's homage, Vieste had jumped to the news for the legendary love story between the young fisherman Pizzomunno and his beloved Cristalda.
The initiative is part of the review 'Vieste in Love' which starts on August 31 and ends on September 8, in which over 70 events will close the summer season. But the organizers swear that the idea is to transform Vieste into a place of eternal love for everyone.

The story begins on the Apulian beaches of Vieste, a fishing village with houses framed by the sea. According to the legend Pizzomunno was a beautiful young man, tall, strong and charming, so much so that no woman could resist him.

Cristalda was no exception. With her long blonde hair and angelic face she had a beauty that was more unique than rare. A very sweet love story is born between them. Pizzomunno, however, is a fisherman, so he spends most of his days at sea and is continually tempted by the sirens who want to charm and seduce him. According to the legend, the fishermen were subjected to the insistent attentions of the sirens who populated the blue sea of Vieste and who only aimed to take their unfortunate lives.
The same thing happened to Pizzomunno who, on several occasions, finds himself facing them. To convince him, the mermaids offer to become his servants and to live with him in the abyss. But he, in love and faithful as never before to Cristalda, refuses and pays a high price for this affront to sea creatures.
Humiliated and enraged, the mermaids retaliate in the most evil way. Thus, while the two lovers are embraced in the moonlight by the sea, the sirens emerge from the abyss and carry Cristalda away. Pizzomunno is so destroyed by pain that his body remains petrified, transforming itself into a huge monolith that still today dominates the beach of Vieste.
The monolith, about 25 meters high, was given the name of the young lover, the Pizzomunno, which imperiously stands out on the Apulian coast and which has made it famous throughout the world for its unmistakable panorama. According to the legend, however, the spell is broken every hundred years and for one night only, on August 15, where the two lovers can finally meet and love each other. A story with a truly unexpected ending.
