The plastic labyrinth: 6 thousand bottles to reflect on waste

How much do the plastic bottles we use pollute? It is often difficult to really realize how much our daily consumption habits can make a difference on a large scale. A group of activist artists known as Luzinterruptus are providing memorable visual proof of this in the form of a "Plastic Waste Maze".

How much do the plastic bottles we use pollute? It is often difficult to really realize how much our daily consumption habits can make a difference on a large scale. A group of activist artists known as Luzinterruptus are providing amheinous visual evidence of all this in the form of a "Plastic Waste Maze".

“We were trying to poetically show the amount of plastic waste that is consumed every day. In addition to focusing attention on the big business of water bottling, which leads to very serious problems in developing countries, whose citizens have seen their aquifers being privatized with impunity for the exclusive enrichment of big entrepreneurs and ruling classes, unscrupulous ”, explains the group.

In May the artists did just that, while traveling to Poland to participate in the Katowice Street Art Festival. After four days of work they got a path of 26 meters of plastic waste, framed in a single piece measuring 7 x 5 meters and 3,40 high, full of labyrinthine corridors in which to play, get lost or alone reflect by observing the colorful packaging.

At night, the piece turns into a magical enclosure, a sort of intimate and luminous chapel, with walls made of monochromatic plastic tiles. To model this installation, more than 6000 bottles of water, collected in a local production plant for bottling, which supplied the waste of products that do not comply with the quality standards required for marketing. The containers were placed in transparent bags, illuminated with LEDs and suspended from a metal structure.
