A desert that cannot be more deserted. A reddish land surrounded by nothingness, populated only by wild animals. Or so it was thought. The crew of a helicopter discovered a mysterious one during an overflight metal monolith in the heart of Utah's wasteland.

What began as a routine flight to monitor wildlife took an alien turn to say the least for the Utah Department of Public Safety after agents stumbled upon a mysterious monolith.

On Wednesday, Aero Bureau officers were flying by helicopter, supporting the Wildlife Resources Division that was supposed to count the bighorn sheep when they spotted something that looked like something out of "2001: A Space Odyssey." Bighorn sheep, also known as Rocky Mountain sheep in southeastern Utah, live in some of Utah's most rugged and remote areas and survive in hostile climatic conditions.

"One of the biologists spotted it, and we happened to fly right over the top," pilot Bret Hutchings told CNN.

According to the pilot, the aliens have nothing to do with it. It is in fact a human creation, most likely made by an artist.

“I guess a new wave artist or something or, you know, someone who was a huge fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey,” he said, referring to a scene from the 1968 film where a black monolith appears.

Certainly the object is disturbing: it stands in the middle of the red rock with its shiny silver color, alone, planted in the ground. The pilots estimated it to be about 3 meters tall and was made of some sort of metal, the luster of which was in stark contrast to the huge red rocks that surrounded it.

Authorities are now trying to figure out how he got there. Furthermore, it is illegal to install structures or works of art without permission on public land

"Regardless of which planet you come from," joked the Department of Public Security.

"This was the strangest thing I have seen in all my years of flying."

The monolith has also been compared to sculptures by artist John McCracken, who lived in New Mexico and New York until his death in 2011.

The location has not been revealed to prevent curious or amateur explorers from getting stuck in the wilderness.
