The courage of women: two conductors against the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Two conductors, one Russian and the other Ukrainian, who are not afraid to make their voices heard and to protest against the war

They are called Elena Kovalskaya e Oksana Lyniv and they are two internationally renowned conductors: the first, a Russian, currently director of the Meyerhold State Theater in Moscow; the second, from Ukraine, has been conducting the Teatro Comunale in Bologna for a few weeks. Both have openly sided against Putin and against the violence perpetrated against the Ukrainian people.

Kovalskaya has chosen to step down from the prestigious position of director of one of the most important theaters in Eastern Europe, in protest at Russia's unjust attack on Ukraine. An act of courage, that of Elena, above all because the theater administration of which she was director had forbidden all the workers to comment on the political situation, warning that she would consider any manifestation of protest or dissent as treason.

Friends, in protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine I resign from the post of director of the state theater - he bluntly wrote in a post on Facebook. - You can't work for a killer and get paid by him. I will carry out the shows already started, on a voluntary basis.

Lyniv, on the other hand, shared a moving video message on social media in which he expresses all his anguish at having learned that his small hometown is now in the hands of Russian forces: right now he is trying to get in touch with his family in Ukraine, and with many fellow musicians who have remained in the country. She too, like Elena, does not hesitate to openly condemn Putin and his violent politics:

Now Putin is showing his true face. Whoever is silent or unable to say no to this situation, he is supporting this new dictatorship. Our country will never give up and we will fight to the last drop of our blood. Ukraine will never accept this aggression and will never be able to give up its sovereignty: we have another language, another culture.
