After the birth of their first child, mothers and fathers' sleep duration and satisfaction no longer return to pre-pregnancy levels for at least six years after delivery. The confirmation of science.

After the arrival of a baby, you will no longer sleep as well as before. At least for its first 6 years of life. To confirm what all new parents experience on their skin after the birth of a baby, comes new research that has also calculated how long the sleep of dad and mom will be affected by the new family member.

The new study conducted by researchers at the University of Warwick in collaboration with the German Institute for Economic Research and West Virginia University, in fact, monitored the sleep of 4.659 parents who had had a baby between 2008 and 2015 with interviews in which they reported to scientists the quantity and quality of their "sleep".

From the data collected it emerged that in the first 3 months after the birth of the first child, mothers slept on average 1 hour less than before pregnancy, while the duration of sleep of fathers decreased by about 15 minutes. As Dr. Dakari Lemola, research coordinator also pointed out:

"Women tend to experience more sleep disruptions than men after the birth of a baby which reflects how mothers are still too often in the role of primary caregiver than fathers"

And so far, nothing sadly new. However, what the analysis revealed is that even after the children were over 4 and at least up to six, the duration of sleep was still about 20 minutes shorter in mothers compared to 15 in fathers. In addition, the effects of sleep were more pronounced in the parents of the first child than in those who already had other children.

Against all odds, however, there were no significant differences between the effects on sleep in mothers who breastfeed exclusively versus those who were mixed breastfeeding or those who only used formulated milk.

A further confirmation, in short, that the arrival of a child completely changes the life of parents, especially mothers, bringing so much, so much love, but also taking away time and quality from our sleep at least until ... first grade.
