News of an incredible new archaeological discovery comes from Egypt where a lost and well-preserved city has been found near Luxor. Nicknamed the "city of gold", it dates back to about 3000 years ago.

What is considered the "largest city ever found in Egypt" has now "re-emerged" thanks to the invaluable work of a team of local archaeologists, led by Zahi Hawass. It is 'The Rise of Aten', founded by the pharaoh Amenhotep III (who ruled between 1391 and 1353 BC) but which continued to be used also by Tutankhamun and Ay. It was the largest administrative and industrial settlement of the time.

The announcement of the exceptional and very important discovery was the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities which also showed the incredible photos of the find on Facebook.

The city, hidden under the sands of Luxor for over 3000 years, is a truly exceptional find so much so that Betsy Brian, professor of Egyptology at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, in the United States defined it:

"The most important discovery since Tutankhamun's tomb"

Zahi Hawass, the most famous Egyptian archaeologist and head of the mission, proudly announced the find he had been waiting for for years. Several teams of foreign archaeologists had in fact tried to locate the remains and bring them back to light several times, but without success.

The surprisingly well-preserved area where the Pharaonic city was found lies between the temple of Amenhotep III in Memnon, west of the modern city of Luxor, and the temple of Ramses III in Medinet Habu, another archaeological site located on the bank of the Nile.

The excavation work began in September 2020 and within a few weeks the mission to unearth mud brick formations that belonged to the ancient city and which are still in good condition and include almost complete walls. Since then, as excavations have progressed, several areas or neighborhoods have been discovered.

Even Hawass's team was even able to identify some of the buildings in the city including a bakery and a pottery conservation area. Then there is another area that corresponds to the administrative and residential district, with larger and more well-arranged buildings, surrounded by a zig-zag wall with a single entrance that leads into the internal corridors and residential areas. A route probably made in this way for safety reasons.

The city is then composed of a third area where mud bricks were produced which were useful for the construction of temples and another area where amulets and decorations were produced. To the north there was finally the cemetery, where several tombs similar to those of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Nobles were found and where now the team of archaeologists hopes to find some intact and still with their contents in treasures.

The discovery could be of fundamental importance to better understand the dynamics of the time and in particular to reveal information on the reign of the controversial Akhenaten and his father.

As Professor Brian stated:

"The discovery of the Lost City will not only give us a rare glimpse into the life of the ancient Egyptians in the period when the Empire was richer, but it will help us shed light on one of the greatest mysteries in history: why Akhenaten and Nefertiti decide to move to Amarna "
