As every year comes the stop to fishing activities in some areas of the Mediterranean Sea. A blockade that aggravates an already tragic situation for workers in the sector, struggling with the climate crisis, the closure of restaurants due to the pandemic and a decline in sales.

After the interruption of fishing activities from Trieste to Ancona and from Manfredonia to Bari, there is a stop to fishing for fresh fish along the entire Adriatic, with the stop of fishing that extends from 16 August also to the stretch of coast from San Benedetto and Termoli. The block will remain in effect until September 16. Like last year, moreover, in addition to the fixed periods of detention, the vessels will have to carry out additional days of blocking ranging from 7 to 17 days depending on the fishing area and the type of resource fished. To communicate it is Coldiretti ImpresaPesca.

This block is added to the drastic increase in the reduction of fishing days imposed by European legislation, for vessels operating by trawling. The days of actual operation at sea fell for some fleet segments, for the segments with higher tonnage, to approximately 140 per year - a too small number, which makes fishing no longer sustainable (especially if we consider the absence of an effective system of shock absorbers and valid market policies capable of compensating for the interruptions).

The situation this year is particularly difficult - denounces Coldiretti. - To the structural problems of the sector are added those caused by the pandemic with a crack of 500 million euros between unsold production, price collapses and restaurant closures, without forgetting the increase in costs to ensure compliance with the distancing and safety measures. on board the boats. If we also consider the combined effects of overheating, climate change, wild imports of foreign products and an increasingly suffocating bureaucracy, the result it is the loss in the space of thirty years of 33% of companies and 18.000 jobs, with the fleet reduced to just 12 thousand units and with an ancient average age of the ship of about 36 years.

The hope is that from 2022 we can start with the new one FEAMPA (European Fund for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture) with positive news to put in place a new system that really takes into account both the reproduction needs of the species of greatest target and the economic needs of seafarers.
