In the Autonomous Republic of Tibet, a team of researchers from the Shanghai Chenshan Plant Science Research Center coordinated by expert Dr. Daike Tian found a new example of begonia with dimensions never seen before.

It is a new species, belonging to the Begoniaceae family, which has been given the name of Begonia gigantica. This begonia grows at heights between 400 and 1400 meters above sea level near the streams in the forests and has been recently spotted in Mêdog County, a lush area full of begonias.

The giant that Dr. Tian found is the largest begonia found in all of Asia so far. To measure it, the help of several people was needed since this Tibetan specimen is about 3.6 meters tall and has a stem, the base of which measures 12 cm in diameter.

An exceptional find if we consider that it would be a species a risk of extinction which was therefore included in the red list of the IUCN Red List.

After having cut it into several sections, the team of researchers proceeded to dry the plant to be able to expose it in theherbarium of the Middle. The begonia, which has become an attraction for scholars and enthusiasts, has not lost its primacy, now measuring 3.1 meters, so much so that the members of the Chenshan Herbarium have even registered it at Guinness World Record.
