There are several possible explanations for what is happening. The most likely is that some combination of increasingly frequent snowstorms in the summer has carried dust, debris and soot from forest fires, which made the ice exceptionally dark this year. It is no coincidence that 2014 will also be the year with the highest number of forest fires ever measured in the Arctic.
A more disturbing possibility is that what we are seeing is the beginning of a cycle linked to global warming. Box, who called his scientific investigation "dark snow," also talks about the mysterious Siberian holes in offshore methane bubbles as evidence that the Arctic is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. He plans to submit these and other recent findings to a formal scientific journal later this year.
