According to the UN report, in fact, the sector that deals with waste storage and processing emits 3 to 5% of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide; so recovering up to 50-80% of the methane produced by the decomposition of waste could be transforming harmful gases into clean energy.
“The waste sector is already working to minimize the impact of powerful greenhouse gases such as methane - said Achim Steiner, director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) - but these are initiatives on a national basis. The time has come to move to a higher level and give a more coordinated global response, especially with respect to developing economies ”.
