Starting from waste to cut C02 emissions

Starting from waste to cut C02 emissions

Reducing C02 emissions is possible! Just start with waste management and processing. This is what a study promoted by the United Nations reveals in which researchers have stated that it is possible to mitigate some of the ongoing climate change by taking care of better garbage management, which would automatically lead to a cut in C02 emissions.

In short, the waste sector should first and foremost cut the quantities of raw materials used from industry, conserve carbon e recover methane from landfills, to produce new electric energy.
According to the UN report, in fact, the sector that deals with waste storage and processing emits 3 to 5% of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide; so recovering up to 50-80% of the methane produced by the decomposition of waste could be transforming harmful gases into clean energy.

“The waste sector is already working to minimize the impact of powerful greenhouse gases such as methane - said Achim Steiner, director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) - but these are initiatives on a national basis. The time has come to move to a higher level and give a more coordinated global response, especially with respect to developing economies ”.
