Oceanbreath, the song created with the sounds of whales and fish instead of instruments by the guitarist of Subsonica

The beauty of the marine fauna transformed into music. Verses that become notes, like that of a zifio intoned like an imaginary flute

There are no electronic or acoustic musical instruments. The sound you will hear is produced only by the fish of the Australian reef and the song of a whale, sampled and transformed into a piano. Is called Oceanbreath and it is the new suggestive piece created by the Subsonica guitarist, Max Casacci.

The beauty of the marine fauna transformed into music. Verses that become notes, like that of a zifio intoned like an imaginary marine flute. But there are also the sounds of the waves and the sounds of dolphins. But the ending is bitter and is punctuated by the sound of the breaking of glaciers caused by global warming.

“Oceanbreath” was born from an idea of the Subsonica guitarist with the help of the marine biologist Mariasole Bianco, president of the non-profit organization Worldrise. Casacci used noises, sound environments, songs or aquatic verses from different marine areas provided by the non-profit organization. By wisely manipulating those sounds, he recounted the breath of the ocean, at times suggestive, but at some points breathless.

In recent days I have been asked several times if there really were no instruments in the song with the sounds of the ocean ...

“I decided to support the work of Worldrise, creating for them a small symphony of the ocean, in four movements, without the use of musical, acoustic or electronic instruments. I worked for months, during the lockdown, manipulating sound environments, songs or aquatic verses from different marine areas, ”said Casacci. “It was amazing to discover that there are varieties of fish capable of singing choruses, with the same twilight vein as birds. Starting from that incredible sound, a kind of mantra, I built this “Oceanbreath”, which opens with an underwater setting that is as quiet but majestic as the ocean itself. To then bring out in the waves an instrument similar to a piano, obtained from the modification of the song of a whale ".

The beauty of the song of marine animals, however, gives way to a disturbing and incredibly real ending, that of the sound of the breaking of glaciers that closes the piece. A way to remind us of the risks caused by rising water and global warming in general.

“The vocality of some cetaceans such as the zifio, from which I obtained an imaginary marine flute, the powerful noises of the sperm whale, but also the intermittent latches of the most common fish have proved to be astonishing instruments for this natural score. Which also wants to be a key to empathize with the largest ecosystem on the planet, and with its fragility ”continues Casacci.

Not just a song, therefore, but a cry of alarm regarding the climate emergency.

    Here the video:

Oceanbreath is part of a new sound work, which will be released at the end of November, thanks to which Max Casacci will use the power of music to protect the environment and to raise awareness on climate change. A musical manifesto built exclusively with sounds and noises of the fragile ecosystems of planet Earth.
