New exciting archaeological discovery in the Egyptian necropolis of Saqqarah, where 50 wooden sarcophagi were found in excellent condition. According to archaeologists, the finds date back to 3000 years ago.
Egypt continues to amaze the world. In these days the archaeological mission in progress in the necropolis of Saqqara has brought to light ancient treasures. After the exceptional discovery of 100 sarcophagi dating back to 2500 years ago, a mortuary temple and the oldest coffins ever found in the area have been discovered. These new discoveries, which excite archaeologists, will help rewrite much of the history of the New Kingdom, the moment of greatest expansion of Egyptian influence.
Saqqara, which houses more than a dozen pyramids, ancient monasteries and burial sites, is a vast necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, which has become a Unesco world heritage site. To carry out the excavations at the site is a team of archaeologists led byEgyptologist Zahi Hawass. A couple of months ago, experts led to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of 2020, giving us another precious piece of Egyptian civilization. And after having found 100 intact coffins, a couple of days ago they unearthed 50 ancient wooden sarcophagi, which had remained hidden in perfect condition for centuries within 50 or so graves, at a depth of about ten meters.

According to the team of archaeologists led by Zahi Hawass, the extraordinary monumental coffins belonged to the mortuary temple dedicated to the Queen Naert, wife of Pharaoh Thetis of the VI dynasty of Egypt.
Among the precious artifacts found there is also a 4 meter papyrus containing chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead, the famous Egyptian funerary text.
Following yet another exciting archaeological discovery, Egypt hopes that the tourism sector, hit hard by the pandemic, can recover. The Grand Egyptian Museum, built near the Giza necropolis, should finally be inaugurated by the end of 2021.
