Swedish home furniture retailer IKEA has pledged to eliminate the use of plastic from all of its consumer packaging solutions by 2028.

The major change will take place in stages, starting with the removal of plastic from the packaging of all the company's new products by 2025. Thereafter, all existing IKEA products will be sold in plastic-free packaging by 2028.

The company currently consumes nearly 920.000 tons of packaging material per year, costing more than € 1 billion.

“The phasing out of plastic in consumer packaging is the next big step on our journey to make packaging solutions more sustainable and support the overall commitment to reduce plastic pollution and develop packaging from renewable and recycled materials. The change will take place progressively over the next few years and will focus primarily on carton, as it is both recyclable, renewable and widely recycled around the world, ”explains Erik Olsen, IKEA Sweden's head of packaging and identification.

On the net there are already those who ironically: “it will therefore be all pressed cardboard so we will have difficulty distinguishing between the piece of furniture and the packaging”.
