The future of Hawaii it is always more green. The famous islands could indeed become the first 100% renewable state by 2045. The clean energy bill passed yesterday, thanks to which 26 billion dollars will be made available from the budget to achieve the goal.

The measure, known as House Bill 623, will make the Hawaii world leaders in policy in favor of renewables. A mix, consisting of wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal that within the next 30 years will have to fully satisfy the electricity needs of the state.

"Hawaii lawmakers made history by passing this law, not just for the islands, but for the planet," he said. Jeff Mikulina, executive director of the Blue Planet Foundation. "This visionary policy is the promise to future generations that their lives will not be powered by fossil fuels and climate change, but by clean, local and sustainable sources of energy".

In Hawaii, renewable energy has been booming since 2008, when the state set its target: to cover 40% of energy needs by 2030.

A long and demanding climb that at the end of 2013 saw the share of renewables jumped from 7,5% to 18. House Bill 623, for its part, is trying to extend this trend and speed it up to reach 30% in the 2020 and 70 percent by 2030, ready for the 100 percent final leap, 15 years later.

Hawaii may therefore be a leader in the United States, but it is not the only jurisdiction wanting to aim for 100% renewable. Cities like San Francisco and San José are working on this front.

The thrust of Hawaii is driven by a mix of factors economic-social e environmental. Economically, the state has historically been dependent on imported fuel, which is three times more expensive than the average for the American continent. Among the environmental factors there is the real and perceived threat of the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and increasingly frequent and violent storms. And then there is theHawaii's abundance of resources: here there is certainly no shortage of wind and sun. One in eight homes has photovoltaics, and about 10 percent of the state's electricity comes from solar. But also hydroelectricity and wave energy can be extensively exploited to free oneself from fossil fuels.

"As the first state to move towards 100% renewable energy, Hawaii is raising the bar for the rest of the country," he said Chris Lee, chairman of the House Energy and Environmental Protection Committee. "Local renewable projects are already cheaper than liquefied natural gas and oil, and our progress towards meeting renewable energy standards has already made save residents hundreds of millions on their electricity bills".

A paradise on earth made of sun, sea, volcanoes, wild nature and clean energy.
