They are called FoodScapes, food landscapes, the works of photographer Carl Warner, 47, the 'Willy Wonka' of art who created some breathtaking scenes using mostly sweets, fresh fruit, vegetables and much more.

A cheese-based Parisian boulevard, a cottage made of candy and a forest of cucumbers. At first glance, they look like gods normal paintings painted on canvas, but, if you look a little closer, you can see that the stormy sea is made up of fish and the hills are mushrooms. They are not painted, but real photos made with real food! Often used for advertising campaigns in the food industry, these works are the result of a process that takes a long time, also because food deteriorates quickly under lights.

It starts with the design of the 3D landscape, then move on to the actual realization, using only "real" food, and finish with digital retouching. For this it takes a few days for each shot. “I tend to draw a very conventional landscape, because I need to deceive the viewer and make them think it is a real scene, at least at first glance. It is when you realize that the ingredients are real that you want to smile, and for me this is the best part"explains Carl, confessing that he spends a lot of time looking at vegetables in supermarkets.

But not everyone liked his work. In fact, as the photographer himself says, many have sent him unpleasant e-mails accusing him of "waste food when children are starving ”. To all of them Carl replies that his purpose is higher, and goes beyond art: he wants above all to encourage healthier nutrition among children, even if, to be honest, some "subjects" chosen to carry out the his food art represent bad options.

"I use my work as a vehicle to make children think about what they eat", concludes the artist, convinced that seeing asparagus become the mast of a ship or broccoli in a beautiful forest will change their minds about the goodness of vegetables. . Thus his project became a book, "Carl Warner’s Food Landscapes“, Which will perhaps encourage children to eat healthy. Of course, it will be better not to browse it when you are hungry.
