Notre Dame is "safe" and the restoration operations that aim to make the magnificent cathedral open to the public, partially destroyed by fire two and a half years ago, can now start. The announcement rekindles the hope of France and the whole world to soon see one of the most beautiful architectural works in the world.

It's April 16, 2019, and the roof of the stunning Paris cathedral is in flames. On social media there are more and more images and videos showing thick plumes of smoke and flames near the spire, surrounded by scaffolding.

The medieval cathedral was completed in the 13th century and today, with its towers, spire, buttresses and stained glass windows, it is considered a work of extraordinary architecture as well as a religious symbol. Located on the Île de la Cité, it boasts 13 million visitors a year (or rather it boasted, because since then, of course, the splendid opera is closed to the public).

The safety works start immediately and the French government promises to return Notre Dame as soon as possible to the French and to the whole world.

Today the announcement: the safety is complete and then the restoration can start. Which should lead to reopening by 2024.

The cathedral is solid on its pillars, its walls are solid, everything holds together - announces to France24 Jean-Louis Georgelin, head of the public body in charge of rebuilding the cathedral - We are determined to win this battle of 2024, in reopen our cathedral in 2024. It will be an honor for France to do so and we will do it because we are all united on this goal.

The aim is to celebrate the first Mass in the cathedral on April 16, 2024, five years after the fire, despite the delays caused by the pandemic and the lead that spread during the fire.

The authorities are about to publish a tender that will select the companies that will carry out the works. However, the famous Grand Organ of Notre-Dame is already undergoing restoration, with its 8.000 pipes disassembled and sent to experts from all over France, and is expected to be "operational" again in October 2023.

The complete restoration will also include the interior walls and floors of the cathedral, which will undergo a thorough cleaning process at the end of this month.

    Forza Notre Dame!
