Notre Dame is on fire. For a few minutes ago, the roof of the splendid Paris cathedral has been in the throes of fire. On social media there are more and more images and videos showing thick plumes of smoke and flames near the spire, surrounded by scaffolding.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo explained that firefighters are trying to put out the fire and have asked citizens to clear the streets to facilitate relief efforts. On Twitter the mayor wrote:
"A terrible fire is underway at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris: the firefighters are trying to control the fire, we are mobilized locally in close connection with the ecclesiastical authorities".
The medieval cathedral was completed in the 13th century and today, with its towers, spire, buttresses and stained glass windows, it is considered a work of extraordinary architecture as well as a religious symbol. Located on the Île de la Cité, it boasts 13 million visitors a year.
The causes of the fire are not yet known. It is assumed that they are related to the renovations.
