Feminism, ecology and imagination in the new Ghibli movies added to Netflix

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

The long-awaited second round of the films by Hayao Miyazaki, famous Japanese director and screenwriter, author of real animated masterpieces, has arrived on Netflix.

We had already talked to you in February about the interesting novelty proposed by Netlifix to its subscribers: the first seven films of the Ghibli studio: The castle in the sky "(1986), My neighbor Totoro" (1988), Kiki Deliveries at home "(1989) ), Rain of memories "(1991), Porco Rosso" (1992), You hear the sea "(1993) and Tales of Terramare" (2006).

    To these are added now:

    • "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (1984)
    • "Princess Mononoke" (1997)
    • "My Neighbors Yamada" (1999)
    • "The enchanted city" (2001)
    • "The Cat's Reward" (2002)
    • "Arrietty - The Secret World Under the Floor" (2010)
    • "The Story of the Shining Princess" (2013)

These are some of the best known films of the Studio Ghibli who tell us stories with very well-defined characters and to discover themselves. Stories that carry on environmental messages and that in most cases they see how protagonists of strong and independent women (or girls).

It is the case of Wind Valley Nausicaa, a film in which reality and fantasy coexist in a world where the damage of pollution capable of causing death and destruction is evident. The scenario of the cartoon is in fact post apocalyptic, a terrible thermonuclear war has occurred and the survivors are still fighting each other. In all this there is her, Nausicaa, a princess who fights to restore peace and restore wounded nature. Famous the exciting flights of the protagonist on what is a real jungle poisoned by man.

Then there is the Princess Mononoke, blockbuster in Japan, here too we find a protagonist with a strong character and the environmental issue still in the foreground. Technological progress has broken the harmony between man and nature and the inhabitants of a mining town are at war and are destroying the land and logging. Princess Mononoke and Ashitaka, a young prince of a peaceful and remote tribe, will take care of restoring peace and reconciling man and nature.

The Enchanted City it is considered Miyazaki's absolute masterpiece (it also won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and the Oscar for best foreign film). Here her imagination reigns supreme, the film tells the story of a little girl, Chihiro, who tries to free her parents and who has to get by in the threatening spirit world in which she is trapped. The story is full of symbols and is basically a metaphor for a sort of rite of passage that the little protagonist must perform, who, for the first time in her life, can only rely on her own strength.

My Neighbors Yamada instead it is a tribute to the normal life of a family like many others, in short, to the beauty of the simple life and the bonds between people while The Cat's Reward tells the story of a girl in search of her own identity but a victim of her own imagination.

Arrietty and his parents are among the last representatives of the "Borrowers", a people who live under the floor of people's homes without their knowing. Everything changes when a heart-sick child arrives, a magical encounter will then take place that will allow everyone to grow by questioning their own certainties. One of the central themes of the cartoon is that of diversity and peaceful coexistence between people with very different characteristics.

The Story of the Shining Princess is a very emotional animated film with a marked melancholy. It tells the story of two farmers who find a child prodigy, they give her everything she needs but in reality they don't allow her to express her true nature.

Netflix provides us with the right opportunity for rediscover these great masterpieces. And it doesn't end here ... new releases are planned for April, again by studio Ghibli!
