Farmer market at the White House

Farmer market at the White House

After the garden that Michelle Obama had to give up, the first lady tries again, bringing a farmer market a stone's throw from the White House

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Michelle Obama does not give up. And it continues in its small but significant green revolution. He had already tried it some time ago, when he decided to plant an organic garden in the gardens of the presidential residence. The photos of him, armed with a spade and rake, or grappling with heads of lettuce, have been around the world enough to even push Queen Elizabeth to follow her example. Unfortunately the dream was short-lived: the ground of the White House was in fact irreparably polluted by waste water, rich in lead and therefore highly harmful, used as fertilizer during the Clinton presidency of the XNUMXs.

Now the Obamas try again, and give their blessing to theopening of the stalls of the associationFresh Farm Markets just a stone's throw from the White House. It seems that Sam Kass, trusted cook of the presidential couple and currently in force in the American “First Kitchen”, played an important role in the decision.

From September 17th to October 29th, every Thursday from 15:00 to 17:00 land stalls will sell fruit, vegetables, cheeses, meat, milk, yogurt, eggs, preserves and organic baked goods, produced by children local growers. Therefore goods a "Kilometer zero", which allows to limit fuel consumption and consequent CO2 emissions, thus also reducing costs. What is not reduced is instead the taste of organic products, so different from junk food that so many Americans (but not only, ouch us) are used to eat. The opening of the market, and the worldwide impact it will have thanks to the media, could therefore perhaps contribute to dissemination of a healthier and more eco-sustainable food culture. What will Michelle's next move be?
