The corrugated cardboard packaging of the Bestack consortium makes it possible to extend the life of fruit, limiting food waste

The problem of food waste is very serious and we must use all possible strategies to limit it to a minimum. To help in this sense could also be a particular packaging made of "active" cardboard, able to extend the life of the fruit it contains.

Let's talk about the corrugated cardboard packaging patented by the Bestack consortium with the collaboration of the University of Bologna. This particular packaging, since the end of February, is used in some supermarkets for the packaging of strawberries.

Thanks to the innovative packaging, defined as “active”, strawberries are able to stay longer on the shelves. This package, in fact, allows you to extend the shelf life of these fruits, reducing waste by 10%.

A package that, of course, can be used not only for strawberries. As Giuliano Canella stated:

"With a view to continuous innovation, our group has already chosen for some years to adopt the" Active! " for the packaging of strawberries, berries and apricots. It is a technology that exploits the use of natural products to promote a longer shelf life of fruit, allowing a significant reduction in waste "

Active packaging! patented by Bestack, it uses a process of "activation", in the literal sense, of the corrugated cardboard, in the phase immediately preceding the packaging of the fruit.

As we read on the Bestack website:

“With a special technology the packages are nebulized with a mixture of extracts of natural essential oils deriving in turn from fruit, which perform an antioxidant function on fruit and vegetables stored in cartons, slowing down their natural ripening and rotting process. Fruit handled in Attivo! Packaging therefore stays good for longer, on supermarket counters and even at the consumer's home. The numerous laboratory tests carried out in the experimental phase have shown that in the Active! Packaging, compared to other traditional types of packaging, the quantity of product to be discarded, in the case of strawberries, is reduced by 10% and the shelf life is extended. up to 24 hours ".

The benefits are therefore important, both in environmental terms and in the fight against waste, and all of this also has a positive effect on the economic side.
