Original gift idea for Valentine's Day 2010? Adopt a dolphin (and more)

If the advice for ethical gifts to give to HER did not completely convince you and if you are looking for an even more original idea, how about giving her a dolphin?

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Oh yes friends, time is running out! Valentine's Day is a few days away and how many of you are still looking for one nice and ecological gift to do to your beloved? If the advice for ethical gifts to give to HER has not convinced you completely and if you are looking for an even more original idea, how about giving her a Delfino?

This is the idea green of CTS Ambiente, Student and Youth Tourist Center, which promotes for the party of lovers this campaign of adoption, with the aim of finance the study activity of the Dolphin Research Centers of Caprera e Lampedusa. Adopt a dolphin to help protect it.

Through the site www.adottaundelfino.com it will be possible to have all the information to carry out the adoption and it will be possible to see the cards of the animals to give as gifts. Among these we remember: Pinna Bianca, Zorro, Alfa, Alaimo, Mistral, Pioggia and in particular the mascot of the operation the dolphin Heartbreaker.

Heartbreaker was spotted last summer by the biologists of the Caprera Research Center while he was performing amazing acrobatics in the waters of the archipelago, between the island of Santa Maria and the island of Barrettini. Like all dolphins, Rubacuori loves the turns and the spectacular dives with which he impressed the researchers showing his playful and exuberant nature.

The "new fathers" and the "new mothers" will receive a practical kit containing the certificate of adoption with all the information regarding the chosen dolphin and some nice gadgets.

As he explains to us Simona Clò, head of the Nature Conservation Sector of the CTS Ambiente, it is a symbolic adoption that aims to finance the research centers of Caprera and Lampedusa. These have been active for about 10 years with a project entirely dedicated to coastal dolphino Tursiope (Tursiops truncatus).

The biologists of the CTS Ambiente are engaged 365 days a year in various operations: from animal monitoring, to the parrot visual census up to theirs photo-identification. A technique this, which has allowed the creation of a rich photo album, with beyond 160 individuals recognizable by their natural marker: the dorsal fin.

Il Mediterranean it is an area much loved by dolphins where there are frequent sightings of females with their small lorises. But the species is strongly threatened by various factors such as fishing, nautical traffic and not least by pollution. To protect them, adequate conservation measures are needed.

"Thanks to funds collected in recent years through the adoptions”- continues Simona Clò - the research centers were able to purchase hydrophones to listen to the sounds of dolphins and increasingly sophisticated cameras that have allowed the photo-identification of animals. In addition, many dissemination and awareness raising activities were carried out in collaboration with fishermen such as, for example, training courses and whalewatching". The CTS also promotes another initiative, which sees the sweet turtle as protagonist and the possibility of adopting one.

But if the idea of adopting an animal teases you, but you prefer something more "concrete", you can always opt for a cow or a sheep. In particular, if you decide to help keep alive the tradition of the Abruzzese Sopravissana sheep, in addition to the certificate, you will also receive organic products such as cheeses, wool and jams obtained from the breeding of your "goddaughter".

But this year also thanks to WWF and the initiative I WWF YOU (www.wwf.com/adozioni/ adoption_iwwfyou.htm) it is possible to "take care" of many other protected species.

On Valentine's Day we have one more reason to take care of our animal friends: to make a nice and original gift to our sweetheart ... and thus ensure a party of lovers with decidedly greener tones.
