Egypt: JR's spectacular optical illusion that 'tears' the pyramid of Chefren

JR also lands in Egypt and this time with a spectacular optical illusion that 'tears' the pyramid of Chefren

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

To promote Egyptian art, Art D'Egypte with the support of UNESCO, the Ministry of Antiquities and the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a mostra intitolata “Forever is now” between the pyramids of Giza. Unique exhibition of its kind, which includes sculptures and installations by 10 contemporary artists from different countries of the world. Thus combining ancient and contemporary art.

Among them there is also JR, a very talented French street artist and photographer, known to the general public for his extraordinary particularly scenographic environmental creations and also for the works that "tear apart" famous monuments, as he had already done in Rome with Palazzo Farnese. .

For the Egyptian exhibition, JR created a breathtaking installation entitled “Greetings from Giza". Which represents a huge hand with a postcard of the Chefren pyramid between the fingers: looking from the front the installation seems that the top of the pyramid detaches from the base.

The installation is made up of 4.591 NFT, Non-Fungible tokens, each of which shows a detail and is in itself a unique, purchasable work of art. It is no coincidence that they are 4.591, the Chefren pyramid was built in fact 4.591 years ago in 2570 BC

On his Instagram profile, JR said:

Playing with the idea of a postcard in front of the Chefren pyramid, which dates back to 2.570 BC, this installation composed of a steel and mesh structure creates an optical illusion when viewed from a specific vantage point.

And speaking of NFTs he added:

Thanks to technology and NFTs, it is the first time that anyone can actually collect a piece of a public work of art.

But "Greetings from Giza" is not the only work on display, among the artists involved are Alexander Ponomarev, Gisela Colon, João Trevisan, Lorenzo Quinn, Moataz Nasr, Sherin Guirguis, Shuster + Moseley, Stephen Cox RA and Sultan Bin Fahad . Here are some of their works on display.

Here is "Together" by Lorenzo Quinn: it represents two hands which, through a perspective game, seem to touch the top of a pyramid.
