Drinking water from urine: from space to the universities of Morocco

Drinking water from urine. This is not science fiction but a project already active in space, which will now reach the universities of Morocco. It is about taking recycling to extremes to obtain pure water in the absence of other resources. The technology that was originally developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) will now guarantee drinking water to 1200 students at Moroccan universities.

Drinking water byurine. This is not science fiction but a project already active in space, which will now reach the universities of Morocco. It is about bringing the urine recycling to extremes to obtain pure water in the absence of other resources. The technology, which was originally developed by the European Space Agency, will now ensure safe drinking water 1200 students of the university of Morocco.

Last year we had interviewed Luca Parmitano, who had explained to us that aboard the International Space Station waste is banned. Gray water and liquid organic waste are recycled to obtain drinking water and the packaging of the products used is reduced to a minimum.

The same technology from space now arrives on land to ensure safe drinking water where it is flaps are contaminate, as to Sidi Taibi, a village of Morocco. In the area the groundwater resources result polluted by synthetic fertilizers. To solve the problem, the University of Keintra has decided to collaborate with UNESCO to apply ESA's technology to its buildings.

The urine and gray water purification process is powered bysolar power and from wind power. Membranes in ceramic and natural materials are used which constitute very dense filters, capable of blocking unwanted substances, with particular reference to nitrates. Experts are working to further develop the new technology and to use additional elements, such as algae, beneficial bacteria and even more advanced filters.

La emergency situation of Morocco has led to the use of extreme remedies, such as recycling urine to obtain drinking water. Of course, at first glance the project may seem rather bizarre or unusual, but it would be really decisive. A similar system was installed in 2005 at the Concordia Research Base and has worked flawlessly to this day, with rare maintenance interventions.

ESA's technology could develop to ensure safe drinking water from urine for entire cities. It seems that in the future the "Pee" it won't just be a useful source for get fuel o energia, but also a resource not to be underestimated to have drinking water available in areas where blue gold will be scarce.
