A fresco depicting a copy of the Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci was found in a convent now abandoned and reduced to ruins in the Calabrian hinterland of the province of Cosenza. We are in Saracena and the convent is that of the Capuchins, whose foundation dates back to the end of 1500.

A discovery that would give hope for a new precious treasure of Calabrian art and archeology, even if the author and time are not yet known.

The news was spread on Facebook by the associations "Mistery Hunters" and "Mistyca Calabria". The convent, reachable only on foot, was founded in 1588 and gained importance in the 1915th and 1917th centuries, becoming the seat of the novitiate and place of study. The structure closed permanently in 1918 and was last used as a prison in XNUMX and XNUMX.

"We have limited ourselves only to pointing out that the painting exists - declares Giuseppe Oliva, president of the Mistery Hunters cultural association - it is logical that we are consulting documents but we also expect scholars and enthusiasts to help ensure that we can have some more and more detailed and precise information. Now that we have attracted the attention of many, the next step is to make an inspection with archaeologists and art experts who can acquire as many elements as possible through surveys and studies ".

There are numerous copies of da Vinci's Last Supper, the most famous of which are the life-size one by Giampietrino which is now at Magdalen College in Oxford and another smaller one attributed to Marco d'Oggiono, exhibited at the Renaissance Museum of the Castle. of Ecouen, owned by the Louvre. The original was made by the master between 1494 and 1498 in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan. The particular pictorial technique used by Leonardo proved to be very sensitive to humidity over time, so much so that many restoration interventions were made, which ended only in 1999.
