Dear bills, the tricks to save energy (and money)

Saving electricity every day is possible: a few simple measures are enough for a substantial advantage at the end of the month

With the expensive bills looming threatening our daily life, saving (even a little) on our electricity consumption can prove to be very important to save us some money at the end of the month. There are many small tricks that, if combined, can help us consume less energy and receive less heavy bills: let's see some of them together.

Appliances

In this article we have already talked to you about the appliances that "eat" the most energy of all: these are necessary accessories at home, which we cannot help but use, but how to ensure that their use does not turn into a drain on our wallets? Here are some useful tips:

  • Oven. The oven is one of the most "expensive" appliances from an energy point of view. If we have the possibility, we combine cooking in the oven with cooking on the stove: in this way the preparations will be faster and we will have consumed less energy. Furthermore, we never place the oven next to the fridge to avoid waste of energy in the form of heat, and remember to clean it periodically, to increase its efficiency and performance.
  • Refrigerator. It is good to remember to avoid keeping the fridge door open for too long, so as not to disperse the cold: if we have to arrange the shopping just bought, we increase the temperature of the thermostat a little in order to limit the thermal shock between inside and out and strain the appliance motor. In addition, we keep food on the shelves well organized (HERE some useful tips to do this): a tidy refrigerator allows greater air circulation and therefore guarantees better performance. Attention also to the freezer: remember to defrost it regularly so that it works at its best.
  • Washing machine and dishwasher. We always use these appliances with a full load and wash at low temperatures: full loads will allow us to do fewer washes and, therefore, to consume less water and electricity. The monthly savings for the washing machine that is used only when fully loaded and cold is about one euro: it might seem a paltry saving, but if multiplied by all the months of the year and added to the contribution of the other household appliances (dishwasher and dryer , if any) can result in annual savings of around 40 euros - certainly not a few pennies!

Lighting

When it comes to saving energy, the choice of light bulb can also make a difference. Common halogen bulbs (equipped with an outdated technology) last around 7.500 hours and are very expensive - around 8 euros spent for 1.000 hours of light. In reverse, LED bulbs last almost double (up to 15.000 hours of use) and consume less than half - just € 2 for 1.000 hours of lighting.

So, to save on the electricity bill, we just need to replace traditional bulbs with LED bulbs as the first burn out and stop working. When purchasing the new light bulbs, we pay attention to the voltage and choose one that is suitable for the environment of the house in which we want to place the new light bulb: for example, for the bedroom we can choose a lower voltage than the kitchen - room in which we spend a lot of time and where lighting is key; on the contrary, in the closet or in the laundry we can be satisfied with a minimum voltage in order not to waste electricity.

A separate discussion should be made for the lights that signal it stand-by of household appliances: a small red light next to the TV screen certainly consumes little, but the sum of all the stand-by lights in the apartment translates into an energy and economic waste that should not be underestimated. So let's remember to turn off your PC, television and stereo systems after each use; we can too make use of a multi-socket "power strip", in order to turn off all technological devices together with a single and practical button.
