The City of London, the historic central “Square Mile” district of London, from October will meet its energy needs using only renewables.

A historic step forward that will allow the British capital to cut CO2 emissions and make less use of fossil fuels. Starting from October 2018, the City of London will in fact cover 100% of its energy needs through clean energy, installing photovoltaic panels on buildings, investing in major solar and wind projects and purchasing clean energy from the grid.

Although it is an area of approximately 3 sq km, the City of London is an important financial center within the city. Its energy conversion sends a clear message: London intends to take strong action against climate change.

Members of the Policy and Resources Committee supported the idea of generating electricity on owned sites across London, investing in external renewable energy and purchasing renewable energy already available on the market.

The plans will see an increase in solar panels on City Corporation buildings and investments in installations such as wind or solar.

“The City Corporation is a major utility for the capital. It manages a large portfolio that includes social housing in 6 London boroughs, 10 top-tier academies, three wholesale markets and 4.500 hectares of green space including Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, ”the official website reads.

Thanks to this initiative, the capital aims to reduce CO2 emissions but also to save on energy costs since, with the exception of initial investments, the one produced will be free because it is generated thanks to the sun and wind.

Catherine McGuinness, Chair of the City of London Policy and Resources Committee, he said:

“Providing 100% renewable energy will make us cleaner and greener, reducing grid dependency and running some of our buildings with zero-carbon electricity. We are looking at the environmental impact of our work and hope we can be a beacon for other organizations that will follow suit. By generating our own electricity and investing in renewable energy, we are doing our part to help meet international and national energy targets. "

The City Corporation already produces renewable energy in other locations, including Parliament Hill Lido in Hampstead Heath and The Warren.

An example for all the cities of the world.
