Chernobyl and what we know about the destroyed radioactive waste deposit

Almost a month after the occupation of the Russian troops, the personnel of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant were finally replaced. Two weeks ago the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern about employees who were working non-stop. Meanwhile, according to Ukrainian sources, a radioactive waste depot was also destroyed

After more than 600 hours of work, some of the personnel of the Chernobyl it has finally been replaced by 46 volunteers, who will continue to ensure the safe operation of the decommissioned nuclear power plant. Civilians present in that territory were also evacuated and a total of 64 people were evacuated.

There had been many alarms in recent days for the lack of electricity recorded twice.

The staff had been on duty since February 23 and, according to the Ukrainian authorities, were no longer able to carry out "repairs and maintenance" of the safety equipment, also "due to physical and psychological fatigue" as they had been in service "without interruption for almost three weeks".

The conditions were communicated by Energoatom to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which in recent days had also alarmed the UN authority which had expressed "safety concerns" also as regards the "transport" of personnel "to outside the exclusion zone ".

    The storage of radioactive waste

Russian troops occupying the Chernobyl nuclear power plant allegedly "ransacked and destroyed" a laboratory on the site.

This was stated by the Ukrainian officials of the state agency that manages the exclusion zones:

The Russian occupiers illegally seized the latest laboratory worth 6 million euros, which is located in the zone…

The lab had highly active samples and radionuclide samples, which are in the hands of the enemy today, they write in a long post on social media. It also contained valuable analytical equipment that was not available elsewhere in Europe

Chernobyl - the site of the world's worst nuclear accident in 1986 - is not a functioning power plant, but it still requires constant management. Now it is a huge concern and, as if that weren't enough, the Ukrainian parliament earlier this week reported that forest fires would have broken out in the vicinity of the plant, detected by satellite images.

Although it comes from the Ukrainian agency, even that of the deposit remains news to be verified as soon as possible.
