When closed it looks like a box, but once opened it reveals its true nature. IS Story pod, la library Pop-up installed in Newmarket, a suburb of Toronto. A small corner that distributes culture and that has allowed redevelop a square of the recently completed neighborhood.
The work was carried out by the team of architects fromAtelier Kastelic Buffey. Just like the pages of a book, Story Pod flips through. Made in black to attract the attention of passersby on the nearby main road and those in the pedestrian area along the adjacent river, the bookcase is made up of vertical slats whose spacing varies.
The wider slats allow the light to filter through and show what's inside.
Thus, even before entering it is possible to understand what it contains, encouraging readers to enter: volumes for large and small.
During the day, two of the walls are opened just like the covers of a book. Guests are welcome to grab a book and leave one, or just sit on one of the built-in seats and read.
At night when the doors are closed, energy efficient LED lights powered by panels PV on the roof make this small bookcase self-sufficient by lighting the interior as one flashlight.
The library was built by a team of volunteers, while AKB carried out the project without feel no sum. The funds necessary for the purchase of the materials were donated by HollisWealth.
