Did you know that, among many others, Salvador Dali had also created illustrations for the story of Lewis Carroll? 12 lithographs, one for each chapter of the volume, together with the cover of the book. The few copies in existence are high-priced collectibles, however Princeton University Press, in 2015, had published a reprint of the illustrated edition on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Alice in the wonderland.
As we know, Alice in Wonderland, is a fantastic novel first published in 1865 by the English mathematician and writer Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.
The illustrations were commissioned to the satirical cartoonist John Tenniel and became the official ones, although over 1200 illustrators illustrated the successful book. Among them also the genius Salvador Dalì, whose works will be protagonists throughout the year in the streets of Matera, the capital of culture.
A multifaceted artist and master of surrealism, Dalì has always ranged from painting to sculpture, from graphics to design, from cinema to photography. He is also an excellent draftsman of the 1969 edition of Alice in Wonderland.
The version illustrated by the painter for the Random House publishing house was produced in 2500 copies, all of which were sold for 375 dollars. A particular edition that soon disappeared from the market and became a collector's item. In 2017 it was reprinted with its bizarre and surreal colors look how beautiful:
