Our feline friends may not be as outgoing and boisterous as dogs, but they certainly have their own particular way of communicating and making themselves understood.

Cats, like all other animals, have their own way of communicating with their peers, but also with us humans: for example, if the animal lies on its back, it shows that it wants to trust us completely, or if it does purr makes us understand that we appreciate our pampering and want more. But what does the action of squinting by a cat mean? If the cat turns to us squinting, he is communicating the total to us confidence that he has towards us: this, in fact, is a clear gesture of affection that felines use among themselves and with the humans they consider part of their family. With this action the cat is letting his guard down because he feels safe in the environment he is in and with the people around him.

To scientifically prove the nature of this behavior, researchers from the University of Sussex (UK) conducted a study last year, which also highlighted how much this "game of glances" is important in our communication with felines.

The researchers designed an experiment in which two groups of cats and their owners were involved: humans belonging to the first group were asked to sit about a meter away from the feline and squint when he was looking at them; the cats in the second group had no interaction with the gaze of their human friends. Hidden cameras framed both the faces of humans and felines of both groups: it was found that cats are more likely to squint at humans after they squint when looking at them compared to the condition of non-interaction.

Hence, this feline way of express relaxation and serenity it can also turn into a strategy with which humans can "communicate" with cats they do not know, expressing trust, or with their cat, strengthening their emotional bond with the animal.
