    This is what is established by a new amendment that modifies the legislation on animal welfare, approved by the Portuguese government and entered into force last Wednesday.

    The amendment, proposed by the PAN party (People, Animals and Nature), therefore provides more severe penaltiesand for anyone who causes pain, suffering and even the death of dogs, cats, ferrets, "without a legitimate reason".

    In addition to the prison, the sanctions fines applied in case of mistreatment of animals and the proceeds deriving from the fines will be destined to kennels, catteries, public and private bodies and associations that take care of abandoned animals.

    The revised legislation will no longer allow legal loopholes for those who harm an animal and will also punish those who keep animals in unsuitable structures and those who do not give them assistance in case of danger, as unfortunately happened in the recent fire in two shelters. squatters where 69 dogs and nine cats left to their fate have lost their lives.
