Rescued bear cub in Val di Jon in Trentino. A particularly delicate operation that fortunately saw the animal and its rescuers come out unscathed.

The bear was found by the Forest Guard while he was carrying out some checks in the area. The men heard some moans and, approaching, they discovered the reason: the hind leg of the baby was stuck between two trees.

After a first remote control, the men of the Forestry Corps determined that the cub would not be able to free himself. The situation was complicated by the fact that the mother was close to what had happened.

The specialized personnel thus approached the place of the incident by helicopter, an operation that favored the removal of the mother. In this way an operator was able to intervene with a chainsaw, cutting the branches of the plant that trapped the baby. It is good to specify that it was a very delicate operation, which only extremely specialized personnel are able to carry out without injuries.

The particularly delicate operations were carried out quickly and in the best possible way, thanks to the professionalism of the personnel involved, both of the Helicopter Unit and of the Trentino Forestry Corps.

Spotting bears in these areas is rare but not impossible. For this there are behaviors to be respected to avoid the worst.

First of all it is necessary to know in advance if the area in which you intend to make an excursion is in that period known to be frequented by females with puppies. The Trentino Region provides a map that is constantly updated on the Grandicarnivori.provincia.tn.com website.

The region's site also offers a handbook in case a bear is encountered:

    • Never stay close to a bear to observe or photograph it: this makes it confident with humans.
    • If the bear hasn't noticed you, retrace your steps silently
    • If he has noticed you, he will probably walk away on his own. Wait before continuing and don't follow him.
    • If the bear stands up on its hind legs, it wants to identify you. Stand still and let your voice be heard in a calm tone
    • If the bear remains stationary, move away slowly
    • If the bear approaches, stay still, make your voice heard without screaming, letting him know that you are not a danger to him
    • If the bear attacks, stay on the ground face down with your fingers interlocked behind your neck and your arms protecting your head. Don't shout and don't try to hit him. If you are wearing a backpack, don't get rid of it - it could be useful to protect you. Get up only when the bear has moved away.
