After passing 50 years of his life with his paws tied with spiked chains, Raju can finally walk free. It's hard to find words that can describe the moment this beautiful gentle animal, which for decades had been beaten, abused, forced to give almsundergoing unspeakable suffering, he was saved.

It happened at night, to avoid further suffering due to the tremendous heat in India. Rescuers of him swear that the good giant she cried as she realized her ordeal was coming to an end. Raju, who in his prison life passed under 27 owners, was so hungry that he ate plastic and paper to fill his empty stomach.

Had been in chains 24 hours a day, without ever knowing what it means to walk without nailed logs, without any shelter. His nails are severely compromised, with abscesses and injuries caused by the spiked chains and asphalt he was constantly forced to ride back and forth on. Pain and cruelty was all he knew. His last tormentor even used to pluck the hairs of his tail to sell them as a good luck charm.

An act of intolerable cruelty which makes it easier to understand why the tears rolled down her face during the rescue. Indeed, some experts believe that elephants cry when excited, just like humans.

“It was incredibly emotional. We knew in our hearts that he was realizing he was released. Elephants are majestic and highly intelligent animals. We can only imagine what it meant for him to suffer half a century of torture. Until we arrived, he had never walked free from his shackles. But today he knows what freedom is, ”explains Pooja Binepal of Wildlife SOS-UK.

It took 45 minutes to free him from the tight chains wrapped around his paws, which caused him pain as soon as someone tried to remove them. Four mahouts, the elephant handlers, gently persuaded him to sit down and it was finally possible to give him freedom. Raju has taken her first step towards a new life one minute after midnight on July 4th. And it was finally fed properly, with bananas, banana leaves and mangoes. Now he will be kept in isolation and cared for, only to be reintroduced into the herd of the center, made up of other elephants who have known the cruelty of man.
