Here we go again… In perfect health, but killed because the zoo couldn't afford to keep them. Nine lion cubs in the past five years have come to a bad end. The chilling story, sadly not an isolated case, comes from Boras Zoo, the Swedish zoo near Gothenburg.

It was the managers of the facility themselves who admitted it: only two of the 13 puppies born from three different litters are still alive and locked up in the zoo. Two lions died of natural causes and the remaining cubs were euthanized.

A practice that Boras Djurpark, about 40 kilometers from Gothenburg has been using for some time. Simba, Rafiki, Nala and Sarabi were born in spring 2012 and euthanized in fall 2013, while Kiara, Banzai and Kovu were born in spring 2014 and were killed between summer and fall 2015.

In 2016, Potter, Weasley were killed, while Granger and Dolores were transferred to an English zoo. According to what the managers say, everything would have been done to sell them or move them to other structures.

“We didn't find anyone available and there were too many animals,” they say.

“When they started being too aggressive and the group was too large we had to proceed in that way. It's no secret and we don't try to hide that we work this way. Unfortunately, it's a natural path for groups of lions, ”explains Bo Kjellson, the park's managing director, to Swedish TV SVT.

The thing that shocks us is precisely this legalized practice and the fact that we are almost scandalized that lions can be aggressive. Of course, in a context in which they come drug addicts and drug addicts to become automatons, perhaps it may seem strange to see them behave according to their nature. This is yet another reason why we strongly condemn zoos around the world.

Suffice it to say that it is not the first time that we have talked about animals killed for redundancy. Let's remember for example Marius, the little giraffe killed in front of the spectators and then fed to the lions in the Copenhagen Zoo. In that case, the whole world was outraged by the spectacularization of death, something that obviously in nature would not have caused any sensation.

And how can we forget the Norwegian zebra fed to tigers a Kristiansand Animal Park, again because the animal could not be maintained by the zoo.

Here's why we say NO to the zoo:

    • The shocking pictures of the animals addicted to the zoo to take a selfie with the visitors (PETITION)
    • The skeletal lion of the zoo of Cominlla (PETITION)
    • The harrowing video showing polar bears exhausted by the heat in the Fasano zoo

All this makes us reflect once again on the uselessness of these structures that for pure profit do not respect the welfare of animals.
