After the suspension of the past few months, the Cga agreed with the Sicilian hunters, reopening the hunting of the wild rabbit.

The good news about the stop of rabbit hunting in Sicily lasted too short. Last September the TAR suspended it, accepting the appeal presented by various environmental associations. Yesterday, however, the Cga (Administrative Justice Council for the Sicilian Region) he proved the hunters right by reopening the wild rabbit hunt.

With the Cautelare Ordinance n. 816/2020 published on 18 December, the Cga has in fact accepted the appeal proposed by theUnion of Sicilian Hunting Associations.

Just over two months have passed since the order of the Tar that had accepted the appeal against the 2020-2021 hunting calendar presented by Legambiente, Lipu and WWF. Specifically, rabbit hunting had been completely suspended due to the absence of censuses and the complete protection of the lapwing and pochard species typical of wetlands was established. The ordinance also prohibited the killing of pheasant, gray partridge and woodcock.

But, at least as far as rabbit hunting is concerned, the hunters have now got the better of them.

And while the Cga reopens rabbit hunting in Sicily, what is still considered a noble sport by too many people continues to claim victims and not only among defenseless animals. Just a couple of days ago the news of the death of the regional president of theFree Hunting Association of Calabria, Pasquale Paradiso, during a hunting trip. He was killed by a shot from his rifle that left accidentally following a fall in a countryside in the municipality of Paterno Calabro, in the province of Cosenza.
