Chile wants to increase the punishment for those who mistreat animals. You will face up to 10 years in prison

After other countries, Chile is also preparing to increase penalties for those who mistreat animals. You will face up to 10 years in prison

Just a few days ago we let you know that in Greece, those who abuse animals risk 10 years in prison, a novelty voted unanimously by Parliament in mid-November. Now another state, on the other side of the ocean, also wants to propose the same exemplary punishment for those who abuse animals. This is Chile.

To prevent animal violence from escalating, Chile plans to increase penalties for those who abuse them. In fact, the deputies of the Regionalist Green Social Federation (FRVS) recently presented a project to the country's Congress that aims to respond decisively to the various cases of violence against animals that unfortunately have recently occurred in Chile.

One of the best known was the one committed in the municipality of Santa Juana, in the Biobío region, where a group of young people tied up, beaten and finally burned the dog's paws just for "fun". A crime that has outraged public opinion and given a boost to those in charge to speed up the implementation of new measures.

The new law, if approved, will bring the prison sentence for those who commit this type of crime from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 10 years. A significant change, considering that the current sentence for animal abusers in Chile provides from 61 days to 3 years of detention.

Esteban Velásquez and Jaime Mulet, deputies leading the initiative, also propose to increase the fines for violence against domestic animals or other species. From 1,5 million Chilean pesos (around 1600 euros) to 4,5 million Chilean pesos (almost 5000 euros).

Furthermore, it is requested that anyone who commits a crime against animals be prohibited from possessing them for life.

Deputy Velázquez explained what animated the presentation of the project:

"We are motivated by affection, by the bond that is created with our pets, the state should provide protection to our younger brothers, as we have long called our animals, our companions, and for this with greater criminal penalties we want a message to be sent to the public that anyone who abuses animals risks harsh penalties that the courts will apply, ”he commented.

The law on the protection of animals in Chile was enacted in 2009 and has been amended on several occasions with the aim of trying to stem violence against pets or other species.

We look forward to this further law, hoping that it will actually serve as a warning to all those who feel "fun" in making animals suffer and that, more and more states, do so.
