T-shirt: 10 ideas to creatively recycle old t-shirts

Over time, it is easy to accumulate t-shirts with holes in them, damaged, deformed or that we would no longer wear simply because they no longer fit. In these cases, instead of throwing them away, we can choose to recycle them creatively, giving them a new life. In the past we had already given you some tips to go fishing with the arrival of summer. Ideas never run out, however, and here are some more tips on how to reuse t-shirts that you would otherwise throw away.

Over time it is easy to accumulate t-shirts with holes, ruined, deformed or that we would no longer wear simply because they no longer fit. In these cases, instead of throwing them away, we can choose to recycle them creatively, giving them a new life. In the past we had already given you some tips to go fishing with the arrival of summer. Ideas never run out though, and here are some more tips on how to reuse t-shirts that you would otherwise throw away.

    1) A very simple solution is the make a toy for your paw friends. It is sufficient to cut the shirt (or more than one) to obtain identical strips of fabric. The length can be variable and depends on the size of your dog: keep in mind that however they should be at least 20 centimeters long to allow you to create the toy. Join the strips of fabric and tie them together at one end. Then divide them into three groups and braid them, as you would with your hair. Finally, also secure the other end with a simple knot, tightening well. A soft fabric bone is ready for your pet's delight!

    2) With the fabric strips of the T-shirts you can also create some original bracelets, soft and colorful accessories for the upcoming summer. The process is complicated in words, but very simple once understood: Vanessa Christenson explains it in detail in her blog.

Essential are long strips of fabric, a pair of scissors, good hands and ... a little patience! Depending on how many fingers you decide to use, the bracelets will be more or less thick. The basic bracelet is built on two fingers, proceeding as follows: first get two strips of fabric more or less a centimeter wide and around 60 cm long and make a horizontal cut of a few millimeters at one end of each. Then match the two slits and pass the remaining intact end of one of the two remnants through them, pulling gently in order to obtain a thin knot that joins them: now you have a much longer strip of fabric. At this point, take one end in your hand (I recommend using your right hand), holding about 5 cm with your thumb and passing the fabric first behind the ring finger and then in front of the little finger; continue rolling it around the little finger and then passing in front of the ring finger, wrapping it; finally pass again behind and in front of the little finger, wrapping both fingers at once. At this point you just have to grab the lower ring of the little finger and pass it over the finger and the upper ring, blocking it, and do the same with the ring finger. Continue by wrapping the two fingers again and repeating this last operation until you reach the desired length (remember to pull the free end from time to time, to check the actual length of the bracelet). When you have reached the desired size, gently extract the two rings of fabric at the base of the fingers, keeping them well together so as not to frustrate all the work and then tying them with the leftover fabric. Finally join the two ends and tie them firmly together: your bracelet is ready!

    3) Always with the strips of fabric it is easy to make a spring scarf.

Take your shirt, cut the seam at the base and proceed by cutting it repeatedly horizontally up to the height of the sleeves, in order to obtain many fabric circles. At that point, get rid of the seams: you will be left with a small pile of strips of colored fabric that you will stretch one at a time (except one) making the fabric expand and curl on itself. At this point, join all the strips and tie the ends: you will get a kind of soft necklace. Use the leftover remnant to cover the knot, simply by rolling it around and securing it in a hidden point with a seam. The more colors you use, the more original your scarf / necklace will be!

    4) From the t-shirts you can also easily obtain elastic bags with large meshes, washable and usable for example for shopping without having to resort to plastic bags.

Blogger Delia (here) explains in detail how; creating these shoppers is actually quite simple: just cut out the desired shape in the fabric of the shirt and fix the edges with a seam (preferably enveloping, to give greater resistance to the bag), and then proceed to shred the entire surface according to a regular pattern , on both sides. Remember to preserve the upper part of the bag, also providing a wider slot for the handles and being careful not to damage the side seams! With a few moves you can create shopping bags of various sizes and colors, excellent to keep in your bag and to be extracted when needed.

    5) If you have a long-sleeved T-shirt that you no longer wear because it is baggy (alas, it often happens in the long run), with the help of a sewing machine you can transform it into a nice shawl cardigan with curled edges in six simple steps.

First, cut a band from the bottom of the shirt (# 2) and do the same with the ends of the sleeves (# 3). At this point, place the shirt on a flat surface, folded in such a way as to have the sleeves in the center (one above and one below); spread the T-shirt well on the surface in order to minimize the volume created by the sleeves (# 4) and cut off the front part (# 5), possibly outlining the area to be cut out first with a pencil. Finally, gently stretch the edges so that the elastic fabric curls, and secure it with the stapler (# 6). Et voila! Here is a new garment, ready to wear.

    6) From a long-sleeved t-shirt that is now out of fashion, you can also create a new trendy top: just start by cutting off the sleeves and the part below the neck seam, possibly fixing the new edges with a reinforcement seam.

Then open the sleeves on one side in order to obtain two rectangular pieces of fabric, eliminating the lower seams and fixing them to the upper end of the top on both sides, providing with the necessary reinforcements at the edges: they will dress like bands to wrap the shoulders . The last step is to join the two bands on the front side, so as to form a gathered balcony on the chest. With the strips of fabric left at this point you can easily create a hair band to match the new shirt, simply by combining many colored strips into a single composite band.

    7) And if you want to try your hand at creating a bikini with the fabric of a colored t-shirt? Let's dust off this old article from last year for the occasion. And for those who object that the fabric of the T-shirts is hard to dry, the answer is: create more than one, and if necessary you will have a replacement ready!

    8) If you want to try your hand at creating something more complicated, why not use the fabric scraps for to make a mat? The procedure - for those who want to try their hand, here you will find all the steps - is a bit complicated and you need notions of crochet, we do not deny it .. but do you want to add satisfaction?

    9) A solution for those t-shirts that you give up on setting aside just for the design that stands out on them or because your friends have left you an indelible dedication from which you do not want to part: cut out, framed and make a picture of it, or why not .. a nice collage!

    10) Finally, here's a quick and super simple idea to do: a work tank top. You will only need the scissors and follow this iconographic tutorial:

Well, they all sound good ideas, but a lack of time forces you to postpone? If you are willing to give vent to creativity in the near future ... do not throw away unused t-shirts, but cut them into many strips and keep the ball of fabric for the days when you will have time to give vent to your imagination! And if you really are lazy and you are discarding a priori the possibility of putting your hand to needle, thread, scissors and ingenuity .. then all that remains is to donate them to those who may need them!

    Good job!
