Palm Sunday: easy and original DIY crafts to explain the importance of peace to children

This year, on the occasion of Palm Sunday, do some DIY jobs to explain the importance of peace to the children

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Palm Sunday is celebrated every year on the Sunday before Easter and Holy Week begins with it. On this day, which falls on April 2022 in 10, we remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, his last days of earthly life and his Passion, Death and Resurrection are celebrated.

Among the most important symbolic elements we remember the olive branches, a symbol of peace and of Jesus, and palm branches, whose sacredness has been recognized since ancient times. In the Greco-Roman tradition, for example, the palm was associated with victory and also represented the link between the earthly and divine worlds.

Branches of palm trees were also waved by the crowd when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. This is why today they represent, just like the olive branches (more used in the West), the symbol of Christ and the triumph of peace.

If this year, on the occasion of the Palm Sunday, you want to make some chore themed, here are some easy and cute DIY ideas to propose to children. Involving them in some creative project can be the right occasion to explain the importance of peace to them.

DIY greeting card

The first job we propose is a greeting card that can be made with a simple sheet of blue paper and a sheet of white paper. The protagonist in this case is the white dove with an olive branch in its beak, another symbol of peace associated with Easter.

  • To make it, just fold the blue sheet of paper in two and draw the silhouettes of a dove with an olive branch and a cloud with hearts on the white sheet.
  • The shapes are cut out with scissors and glued to the front of the greeting card.
  • All that remains is to color them, add any details and the wording "Buona Domenica delle Palme".

Wreath with paper doves

This paper dove garland is very simple to make: all you need is white and yellow paper, scissors and a thin string.

  • Draw the silhouettes of the doves on the sheets of white paper with the children and cut them out with scissors.
  • Draw the olive branches on the yellow sheet of paper and cut them out with scissors.
  • Glue the twigs near the doves' beak, draw a black dot at the eye and make two small holes on the top of the wings.
  • Pass the string through the holes, adding a variable number of doves depending on the length of the garland.

Wreath with olive branches

You can get the children to help you make one wreath with olive branches, perfect to hang on the door on Palm Sunday.

  • Make the base of the wreath by intertwining thin dry twigs with each other, with the help of wire.
  • Then add the olive branches, inserting them among the others.
  • All that remains is to add a ribbon or raw string to the top and hang the wreath on the wall or door.

Heart with olive branch and dove

Here is another DIY peace-keeping job that is very easy to do with the kids. All you need is a sheet of white cardboard, watercolors in shades of blue, a brush, scissors, colored pen, glue and an olive branch.

  • The children will have to draw the shape of the heart on the sheet of cardboard, cut it out and paint it with blue watercolors.
  • In the meantime, they will cut the dove out of paper, which you can print, so you don't have to reproduce it on the sheet by hand.
  • At this point, glue the dove to the center of the heart and add the olive branch.
  • Finally, customize the heart with the words "peace" and "serenity".

Paper palm
