Eggshells could give rise to a new ecological material to be used to create innovative, resistant and flexible packaging

How many egg shells are broken and thrown daily around the world? Well, it could be born from this natural waste product a new ecological material to be used to create innovative packaging.

The news comes from a study by Tuskegee University, presented at the 251st annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, in which it is argued that by adding small parts of eggshell to some already existing eco-plastics it would be possible to obtain a packing material not only completely biodegradable but also particularly resistant and flexible.

Vijaya K. Rangari, de Tuskegee University, explained how the innovative material is obtained:

“We break the eggshells into the smallest components and then add them to a special blend of bioplastics that we have developed. These Shell nanoparticles add strength to the material and make it much more flexible of other bioplastics on the market. We believe that these characteristics, together with biodegradability in the soil, can make eggshell bioplastics a truly alternative packaging material ”.

By now more and more producers are turning from the use of plastic (which weighs too much on our planet) towards some ecological plastics made for example with sweet potatoes, corn starch or other vegetable sources. Often the result obtained is a biodegradable product but most of the time not very resistant and functional.

It will really be the turning point in eggshells that will allow plastic to become just a bad memory?
