Stop palm oil: two children launch the petition against Starbucks

Palm oil, it's time to say enough. Even children ask for it. Food companies continue to produce it and restaurant chains around the world normally buy products that contain it. Among them we find Starbucks which, despite its commitment on the social front, continues to buy palm oil from unsustainable sources. The consequence? The clearing of forests and the disappearance of the natural habitat of numerous animal species.

Palm oil, it's time to say enough. Even children ask for it. Food companies continue to produce it and restaurant chains around the world normally buy products that contain it. Among them we find Starbucks which, despite its commitment on the social front, continues to purchase palm oil from unsustainable sources. The consequence? The abatement of forests and the disappearance ofnatural habitat of numerous species animals.

Abi e Bryce, two very young activists, have decided to launch one petition against Starbucks' use of palm oil, explaining the serious environmental consequences of its production. The population of orangutan it has halved from 1992 to today. This was done for the most part from the destruction of forests - that in Indonesia continue to burn - to make room for palm oil plantations.

Some companies have promised change for the future. When it really does happen, it may be too late. The wild orangutans, at this rate, risk extinction within a few years. Abi and Bryce began their mission from Starbucks headquarters in Seattle to convey a very clear message: stop using palm oil contained in bakery products served in the chain's refreshment points.

The very young activists hope to spread greater sensitivity on the issue of deforestation linked to the production of palm oil thanks to a vast collection of signatures to be carried out through a international petition. The commitment to protect orangutans will reach its peak on August 19, on the occasion of the World Orangutan Day.

Most of the palm oil production - at least 80% - takes place in Indonesia and Malaysia, where 50% of the original forests have been replaced by oil palm plantations, thus giving rise to the most rapid decline of biodiversity never happened anywhere in the world. Every hour, one rainforest surface equivalent to 300 football fields is being razed to make room for the cultivation of oil palms. The disappearance of rainforests has negative consequences for both animals and the ecosystem, as well as for local populations. The situation is now unsustainable. We continue to boycott products containing palm oil e let's sign the petition.
